The Cost of Doing Nothing

The Business Risks of Old Devices

Managing large amounts of data within budget and time constraints is a juggling act that all business in this data-rich age are familiar with. New devices can help reduce these challenges, but many businesses are hesitant to upgrade.

Although some may be put off by the upfront costs of a device refresh, there are other factors that influence the total return on investment (ROI) that need to be considered too.

Old devices cost you, or your customers, more

Statistics show that we waste 21 days per year waiting for old kit to boot or perform tasks. If you aim to stay ahead of the pack, or even just level the playing field in your given sector, your business doesn’t have time to wait for laptops and desktops that can’t keep up.  Add that to the fact that PCs older than four years old can cost small businesses over £1300 in maintenance, repairs and lost productivity as compared to a new Windows device, you have the first of the three most compelling reasons to upgrade.

Old devices add risk

Secondly, with the anytime, anywhere work mentality being more of an expectation than an optional extra these days, greater mobility does also bring additional security concerns. In 2017 Cyberattacks affected just under half (46%) of small businesses. This rises to two-thirds among medium firms (66%) and large firms (68%). Windows Devices that are over 4 years old may not be not equipped with the latest hardware and software features to help protect you or your customers.

Old devices may not stay up to date.

And finally, after January 14, 2020, Windows 7 will continue to start and run, but users will no longer receive updates or support from Microsoft. PCs running Windows 7 after January 14, 2020 should not be considered protected.  It’s important that users migrate to Windows 10 so they can receive regular security updates.
